Phonics
In EYFS and KS1 phonics lessons are taught daily to ensure swift progression through the synthetic phonics programme 'Read Write Inc' (RWI). Children in Reception are introduced to phonemes and early graphemes in Set 1 of Read Write Inc. As the children continue to progress they will learn to segment and blend CVC words for reading before applying their phonological knowledge to spelling new words.
Phonic knowledge is taught in 'Speed Sounds' lessons and applied in the storybook lessons. Children start reading simple sentences in Red Ditty books and then read fiction and non-fiction books carefully matched to their growing grapheme-phoneme correspondence knowledge from RWI Green Book level onwards. Children learn to decode words using phonic knowledge but also learn Red words (common irregular words). Talking about the books is an integral part of the programme. The Read Write Inc. Speed sounds lessons follow a careful progression, with sounds being introduced sequentially in a structured and systematic way. The broad order follows three sets:
* Set 1 teaches the most common sound-letter correspondences: m a s d t / i n p g o / c k u b / f e l h sh r / j v y w / th z ch qu x ng nk
* Set 2 Speed sounds teaches alternative vowel sounds: ay ee igh ow oo oo ar or air ir ou oy
* Set 3 Speed sounds is made up of alternative spellings of Set 2 sounds: ea oi e a-e i-e o-e u-e aw are ur er ow ai oa ew ire ear ure
Throughout Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, children will be taught how to read and spell high frequency and tricky words which will then be used in simple sentence work. As the children progress through Read Write Inc, they will encounter phonemes with more than one grapheme in their reading and will need to select the appropriate grapheme based on their knowledge of spelling rules and patterns. Set 2 and 3 sounds are introduced as soon as the children are secure with set 1 and have progressed to reading Ditty Books. This may happen in Reception or Year 1, depending on the progress of the individual child.
Phonics is taught in groups and in whole class teaching sessions daily. Regular ongoing and half-termly assessment takes place to ensure children are making good progress. Those children who are falling behind, are targeted and extra sessions are included to help them catch up. By the end of Year 1, most children will have mastered the RWI programme of synthetic phonics and be in a good position to take the Phonics Screening Check. Those children who did not meet the standard of the check will continue to be taught phonics in Year 2.
As the children enter KS2, phonics for most children will be incorporated into their weekly SPaG lesson as well as being taught through the spelling curriculum. For some children small group phonics will continue with the teacher and teaching assistant until they are securely working at an appropriate level.
