This term, we have been thinking about Lent. How can we make a new start in Lent? Year 2 have made some special promises. Throughout the term we have carried out many prayerful Lenten activities such as: a sponsored activity, a pilgrimage, prayer stations around school and food bank donations.
Year 2 have been working so hard to solve problems involving money. They have added, found change and reasoned about money. They really enjoyed working with their partners to solve some tricky problems.
On a rainy Friday in December, head to toe in waterproofs, Year 2 embarked on their first forest school session with Mrs Recchia. They had a fantastic time finding sticks, making a stick man and to top it all off had some warming hot chocolate. We can't wait for the next session. What fun!
The Discovery Museum
The children of Year 2 had an amazing time at the Discovery Museum. We found out about Newcastle in the past and the amazing Great Fire of Gateshead and Newcastle. Have you ever heard of the events of that tragic day? Year 2 can tell you all about it. They particularly enjoyed the workshop led by the museum, especiallyputting on a puppet show at the end to tell the story of the Great Fire of Gateshead and Newcastle.
Year 2 have had an amazing STEM week. They thoroughly enjoyed the experiments led by the fabulous Green Shift Education scientists. Year 2 found out about how to create a tall tower using just spaghetti and marsh mallows.
Year 2 are settling in nicely to the new term. We are getting to know each other and have already done some excellent work.
In maths we have been ordering and comparing numbers using the < > = signs. We had great fun pretending to be Charlie the Crocodile, who always eats the biggest numbers.
Year 2 have been enjoying reading Anthony Browne's modern fairy-tale, The Tunnel. Our writing lessons have been sparked by trips into the woods to look for clues about what happened to Jack, a main character from the story. The children have done some marvellous work.
Year 2 have been learning how to write command sentences this week. We have followed instructions to make our own biscuits. The children enjoyed having the chance to bake, but I don't think Mr Dixon enjoyed trying to get the flour off the carpet. Never mind, they were delicious and Year 2 certainly enjoyed eating them. The children wrote some amazing instructions, so if you ever want the recipe, just ask them.
Year 2 have made an excellent start to the year in maths. We have been learning all about fabulous fractions. The children have been finding halves, quarters and thirds of shapes, numbers and objects.
Christmas preparations in Year 2:
Year 2 have found out all about the reason why Christians prepare in Advent and have enjoyed making our own preparations. We have enjoyed our daily Advent reflection, lighting our Advent wreath to help us count down the days until the birth of Jesus at Christmas. The Christmas party was excellent fun. Thank you to Santa for his visit and the wonderful presents he gave us.
Welcome to Year 2's new class blog. We have been thinking about making a good new beginning, which ties in with our new RE topic: Beginnings. The children enjoyed making a creation display to show the Genesis 1 story.
