A HUGE well done to the school football team who have made an impressive start to this year's edition of the Bishop's Cup. Starting the first round group at home, St Mary's performed well on a cold, rainy night to win the group and advance to the second round. At the same stage last year, St Mary's exited the competition on goal difference - no such worries this year though as our team of Year 6s produced arguably two of their best ever performances to advance to the next round following three games at English Martyrs, leaving the boys (and Mr Colling) eagerly awaiting the draw for the next round!
The school football team have made an outstanding start to the league campaign this year. Starting with the pre-season cup, the team qualified for finals night at Winlaton West Lane. Unbelievably, they went unbeaten on the night without conceding a goal and did not win the cup - missing out on goal difference! Equipped with the new gold away kit, the boys continued their excellent form into the league campaign in the first round of fixtures at Fellside Primary. After a slow start, the team came alive scoring freely using their new 1-3-2 formation to head into the winter break top of the table. As always, the boys competed fiercely while maintaining their usual high standards of teamwork, sportsmanship and fair play. Roll on the next round!
On a cold, muddy and rainy night at St Mary's nine girls (wearing the brand new school home kit) bravely took part in this year's Northern Cross Cup 1st round. For most of the girls, this was their first ever experience of organised football - and the weather could not have been more perfect! After getting used the speed of the game, the girls performed admirably and with the determination and teamwork that you would expect from a St Mary's team. The girls managed to finish in a very respectable 3rd place in the group, and they are looking forward to more opportunities to show off their football skills in the future - well done, girls!
