St Mary's RC Primary School, Whickham

Year 6 have enjoyed a visit to the Durham Light Infantry museum and making their own Anderson shelters.

At the DLI the children learned all about what life was like in the home guard. They experienced wearing WWII uniforms and actually held many original artefacts from the war.

They also enjoyed making their own replica Anderson shelters. Some were fantastic and contained all the things found inside one.

A very busy half term - now the hard work for SATs starts!!

Thank you so much for all the kind cards and generous gifts that we received for the birth of Gabrielle Holly Sutcliffe. She is now 3 weeks old and is doing really well.

The football team has began the season in an impressive style. They have already secured their place in the next round of the Bishop's Cup after a draw and a victory at St.Mary's Blackhill, Consett.

They followed this up with a fantastic display at Lumley on Thursday night, securing three wins out of three.

Well done to : Harry, Jack, Nikhil, Luke, Josh, Matthew, Sam, Dylan and Daniel.

Thomas Campion was praised by the police this week for his mature reaction to witnessing a breech of the peace.

Thomas has been invited to the police station in Whickham to have a look around as a reward for his sensible attitude.

The school team have now been official crowned as the best catholic primary school football team, following their 3 game win at St. Marks last night.

The Saints secured their fourth trophy of the season with a 4-0 win over Our Lady of the Rosary, 3-0 victory over Star of the Sea and a excellent 3-1 win to clinch the cup in the final game against St.Mary's Sunderland.

Well done to all the boys.

The football team secured another trophy last night after winning the C.B Watson cup for the second consecutive year.

The year 6 team won all their three games, 7-0, 4-0 and 1-0. They saw off tough competition from Hetton, St Cuthberts and Bullion Lane.

This is their third trophy of the season and gives them confidence as they look forward to next weeks Bishop's Cup final at St. Mark's Westerhope.

Year 6 enjoyed a productive morning at the CLC creating their own version of the news.

With SATs looming the class enjoyed prefecting their writing skills down at the CLC. After investigating the Newsround site, provided by the BBC, they set off using Photo Story to create their own version of the news for that day.

Once they had researched the stories, added images, created motion, they then had to use their own 'news readers' voice to add a voice over for their news report.

A great experience which improved their writing skills, and highlighted some budding reporters and news presenters of the future.

The boys football team were crowned league champions last night, following the final session of the season.

The team had played close to 27 games, winning 25 and only losing 2 matches. Mr Baker (junior) commmented: "In all the years the league has been going, I don't think a team has won so convincingly."

The season however, is not over yet! On Monday the team will travel to Holy Cross, Wallsend for the semi-final of the Bishop's Cup and then Thursday night for the Watson Cup.

Year 6 have been very busy preparing for their SATs, however, we have still managed to have some fun along the way!

Before Christmas we visited the Durham Light Infantry Museum, where we explored what it would be like for those during the 'Home Front'. We dressed up as soldiers, wardens and house wives, while holding and using all kinds of equipment that was important to those at home during the war.

We also had a visit from Richard Stephenson, who came in to share his knowledge about the Home Front.

The countdown to SATs has begun, Year 6 can boost their knowledge by checking out the VLE and completing the tasks and exploring the links to educational websites.

The Year 6 won the 5-a-side St Thomas More cluster tournament. An unbeaten run of matches resulted in a clear victory for the boys. They completed against different schools and brought back the trophy for the 2^nd year running.

Their sporting behaviour and attitude was also acknowledged by winning the Fair Play award.

The Year 6  team won the St. Thomas More cluster. They went on to represent the cluster at the Gateshead finals, where they won their group, however, they were narrowly defeated in the final.

Congratulations to our newly confirmed children in Year 5 and Year 6.

The year 5/6 girls football team secured a last game win to retain the Northern Cross sponsored Bishop's Cup.

Fenwick Lawson visited year 6 and brought a special gift with him.

The year 5/6 football team won the Chester-le-street league.

After an eventful half term, preparations for this year's SATs has been stepped up.

The year 6 rugby team produced a fine display at Blaydon Rugby club in the TAG rugby tournment, finishing second in their group.

Well done to our basketball teams who took part in the Year 5 & 6 tournament at St Thomas More.

KS2 children were invited to Whickham Library to see the author, Bob Hartman.

The school football teams have enjoyed a winning start to the season for both the girls and the boys.

Year 6 have began their journey towards SAT time! In a reverse of roles the Year 6 have already got the SATs on the run.

On The 29th of June 2009 Y6 from St.Mary’s School went to Whitaugh Park on a Residential trip. It was great although the bus journey took a long 2 ½ hours.

5 Girls from Years 5 and 6 took part in the 5 A Side competition at St Thomas More.

St Mary's RC Primary School in Whickham have gone down in history. We are the first school in history to do the double in the Catholic cup comeptitions.

A fantastic effort was made by KS2 on Wednesday 25th March, spurred on of course by Nora and Frank!

Y6 are building up a very exciting relationship with The British School of Tokyo as part of their topic on Japan!

On the 4th of March we went to Felling to compete in the West Gateshead Local Swimming Gala.
When we got there we were all extremely excited however, we were also very nervous.
We were all their by 5:15 wearing our school tracksuits and when we all marched round the pool with our banner, on the way we spotted our future medals.

On the 29th of January 2009, Vincent Cheng, age 11 from Y6 went round the classes to talk about Chinese New Year and all about the year of the Ox. We have also been evacuated.

Children from Years 2,3,4,5 and 6 had a very exciting Monday afternoon at Gateshead CLC!

Our year 5 & 6 boys 5 a side team played on Wednesday 15th January at St Thomas More school. They played well and came 2nd in their group, 3rd overall and recieved medals. Well done boys.

The Children in Y6 have been really busy this term and are currently preparing for their final Christmas performance of " The Snow Queen" (Pictures to follow )
But Ben has taken time out to report on this very exciting and action packed term for Y6.... Over to you Ben...

Everyone in Y6 is very impressed by Ben Harrison's donation of £100 for school funds which he raised doing the Junior Great North Run. We are sure that Ben will help us find something exciting to spend it on so watch this space.

Y6 have had a fantastic term so far, learning about WW2, reading "Carrie's War" and composing our own exciting and descriptive poems!

This morning David Milliband the Foreign Secretary came to visit Y6 and the pupil council in response to the wonderful letters that they wrote to the Prime Minister and Mr Anderson, MP about the situation in Kenya and our links with St Anthony's in Nakuru. They put on a fab assembly and Mr Milliband and the other visitors were all very impressed.

The year 6 SATs take place next week! All of year 6 have worked hard and have nothing to worry about. All they need to do is remember to try their very best, make sure they have a good nights sleep and a tasty breakfast before a test and arrive at school promptly. They also need to remember to bring in their P.E Kit and anything they need for Kenya work every day...and remember their things for their party on Friday.
Oh yes and they also need to keep smilling!

Today our local MP Dave Anderson visited Y6 in response to their letter they wrote to him about their views on the political situation in Kenya.

This term, year 5, 6 and selected pupils from years 3 and 4 went to the Metro Centre to do a maths trail. Mr Maths made up this Maths trail.

Y6 have been working very hard so far this term but have been having lots of fun too! They had a fantastic day at Eden camp in October and are really looking forward to the up coming theatre trip to see "A Christmas Carol" in December.

Year 6 have had an exciting and adventurous term since finishing their SATs in May. They have enjoyed trips to Beamish Museum and the Residential trip to Kingswood where favourite activities incuded climbing, quad biking and ICT activities. Year 6 have also enjoyed making maths games for their buddies and learning about the Victorians. They are currently preparing for their end of year performance and leaver's mass.
Over the past few weeks Y6 have been visiting their secondary schools and I wish them the best of luck in the future!

Once again Dr Maths organised a Maths Trail in Newcastle. This year it was along the Quayside and some of the children from KS2 accompanied by parent helpers had to follow the trail and solve the puzzles. This event is to show the chldren that maths is important in our everyday lives, not just in lessons at school.

Year 6 have been working really hard this term but have been having lots of fun too!
They enjoyed their visit to the CLC where they made some great animations and learned about WW2 through a role playing game!
They also had a fabulous time completing the photo trail on the Quayside and produced some brilliant collages.
The children in year 6 are trying very hard with their SATs revision and I’m sure that this will continue. They are all looking forward to the time after the SATs when they are going to Kingswood for a whole week to have lots and lots of fun.
Special congratulations go the swimming team who recently won the Western Gateshead Swimming Gala and Romany Mc Clure who gained a merit in her grade 3 violin exam! WELL DONE.

All of KS2 have enjoyed their first performance of Panto Pandemonium today! There is still time to catch the show if you have not done so yet on Tuesday 12th at 10am or on Wednesday 13th at 6pm.

Dear parents and Children

We thank you for all the shoes we collected for the Blue Peter Appeal. We collected an astonishing amount of shoes, around about 250 pairs. Last friday we loaded them all in to Miss Hunt's And Mr Mc Carthy's Cars and took them to the collection point at Clarks shoes in the Metrocentre .As you know we are sending them to Malawi to exchange for money and equipment for the children’s corners in Malawi. Blue Peter gives many thanks to those who brought shoes in to our school to help the Aids Orphans in Malawi. But we don’t stop here! We stop collecting the shoes on the Friday the 15th.

Year 6 have been working hard this half term as well as having lots of fun. They had a great time finding out about life during WW2 at Eden Camp and learned all about St Cuthbert when they visited Durham Cathedral. Y6 have shown how responsible they are by becoming house captains, becoming playground pals and running the make poverty history club. All of Y6 are looking forward to their performance of “Pantopandemonium‿ this Christmas! "Oh no they're not..Oh yes they are!"
