Year One 2006 -2007

Well doesn't time fly? I can't believe we have come to the end of another school year. We've been so busy in Year One this term with our topic, Under the Sea. The children have made fish using all sorts of medium, paper, felt, collage materials, paint to name but a few. We had a fantastic trip to the Toy Museum at Tynemouth, where Maureen talked about old mechanical toys and showed us how they worked, then we explored the museum, which is full of fascinating toys.

Exploring the exhibits

From here we went to find shelter in a cafe on the beach, the children were allowed to picnic on the floor as it was quite wet outside. Nathan's uncle was in the cafe and treated all the children free ice-cream! This brightened up our day as well as the weather!

Bede's World 2007

Four new recruits!

KS1 had a fantastic day on Friday, May 11th. First we were all collected by coaches and taken to St Mary's Cathedral in Newcastle where we joined six other schools from the Deanery. The Bishop, Kevin Dunn, said mass and the children sang beautifully, conducted by Fr Michael Humble.

Then St. Mary's went on to visit Bede's World in Jarrow. Year One visited the church and dressed as monks from that time. We processed onto the altar and were told all about the things the monks had to do. They had a very hard life.

Murals in KS1

KS1 children are very lucky, not only do they have very elegant new coat hooks and shoe racks but they are also surrounded by a fantastic mural depicting bible stories

On the opposite wall they can have fun finding the rhyming words and phrases, a dog on a log or a wizard with a lizard, although this can take rather a long time to hang their coats up!

What can you see?

Year One Spring Term

Year One have had an adventurous Spring term learning all about traditional fairy tales. There are some very strange characters in these children’s stories, wicked wolves, greedy girls, terrible trolls to name but a few. The children are now able to re-enact these stories through role play which is a favourite activity. However with an added pirate and purple wizard we never know which path the story will take!

We are also observing and exploring pushes and pulls in science and had great fun using equipment in the yard to work these out.

Panto Time

Well it's that time of year again. Year One are all excited to show off their acting skills with Year Two in our play called, Cock-a-doodle Christmas. There are pigs, sheep, cows and chickens along with the most important person of all, Baby Jesus of course. There will be pictures to follow by the end of the week.

In Religious this term we have been studying about Babies and initiation. We had a visit from Fr Humble to talk to us about Baptism. We also had a visit from Rosa Jane Pears to find out about the things a baby needs.

Today, during mass Rosa Jane was baptised and lots of children turned up to witness this and share her happy day.

Dinosaurs in Year One

Year One have been learning about dinosaurs. We have had some interesting pronunciations of some of the dinosaur's names especially, compsognathus (comp sog nay thus). We measured all our class dinosaurs and ordered them from the shortest to the longest.

On October 18th we went on a really exciting adventure to The Centre for Life. We caught the number 98 bus into Newcastle and had fun exploring all day.

Mrs Wright Year One

The children in Year One have worked so hard this year. In September they began “grown up writing and joined the letters together which is not as easy as it sounds.
During the 1st term we looked at dinosaurs, what they ate and where they lived. This was very exciting and sparked off many interesting stories and pictures.
Mrs Wright and Mrs Barrett went on a visit to our link school in Picardie in France and they sent us all Christmas cards and letters and we have tried to write a little French back to them.
Our Christmas performance took us around the world sharing all the songs that other children sing to celebrate Christmas. The children loved dressing up and working with Year 2 to produce and excellent show.

Mrs Wright

Mrs Wright teaches in Year 1. She is very nice and looks after 23 children. She helps you to learn. She took us on a trip to Seven Stories where we had fun learning about different stories. My favourite is the Gruffalo. She is the best teacher in the world. We like it when she teaches us joined up handwriting.
Mrs Wright looks after all the maths in the school.
She is kind and makes our learning fun.
