St Mary's RC Primary School, Whickham

Year 5 and Reception Class have ended their first year as 'Buddies' in style, enjoying a fun-filled, action-packed excursion to the adventure playground site. All children (and adults) involved in the trip had a wonderful day out - especially as the rain held off until after the classes safely back at School! Throughout the day, the groups had the opportunity to take part in such activities as shelter building, a treasure hunt and a toating marshmallows and hotdogs on an open fire.

We asked the children what they have enjoyed most in their year in reception Class..

Our Living Things topic has been successful as we have learned lots about different environments.

The Reception children have had a very busy time learning about bears!  We have used the internet to find out facts -why not ask them what they have learned.

We have looked at old bears, new bears, made clay honey pots, sketched a bear, painted a bear and made a zig zag book of Goldilocks and the Three Bears -no wonder they are all so tired!

We finished with a Teddy Bear's Picnic with our Buddies (who all brought in their Teddies for a day!) and a trip to the Teddy Bear Factory where we designed and made a class bear.

We have completed our topic on books and made an impressive display of the different kind of books we have made while learning about how a book is made. 

We made our very own Bibles and enjoyed the stories we worked with.

We visited Whickham Library to look at the many different kinds of books there.

We have joined in National Storytelling Week and Aunty Nora came to read The Gruffalo to us.

Brendan ' The Music Man' has been ever popular and is presenting an assembly for the parents on Friday.  We hope you can come to listen to our budding musicians!

Stuart continues to motivate the children in his PE sessions - they work really hard and are ready for a quiet story when they return.

The new children are settling very well into St Mary's School. 

Our Buddies have been fantastic -Thank you Y5!

The boys and girls love Stuart who does a weekly PE session with them -he thinks they are great!

We have had a wonderful year in Reception class and the visit to the CLC for a Pirate  Day was a great celebration as we neared the end of the year. 

Last week we went to the CLC to learn all about pirates. This week we made some pirate boat pizzas. They were delicious!

In Reception Class we have been looking at the topic of "Messengers and Witnesses" in RE and we made a Good News Tree for our classroom. Thank you very much to all of the parents who sent in their good news. We have added your news to our display.

Well this term has gone with a big Wow!

You’re Wow! comments have been very positive and encouraging, and the My World books are lovely to share with the class. Thank you.

We were very proud of the Children from Reception Class and their Y5 Buddies who performed the Nativity at the Metro Centre to an appreciative audience.

Hello welcome to the Reception class of 2009!

The children are settling into school well and are now enjoying our routines.

The Reception Children have graduated with flying colours!

The More Than Dance Company was a fitting end to an amazing first year and the children are a credit to you and St Mary’s School! The boys & girls were exremely well co-ordinated and highly focused on presenting three dances -which they had learned on the morning in only one & a half hours! Well done Reception!

We are proud to present an exhibition of art painted by the pupils of St Mary's Primary School.

Well actually, they have grown physically as well & are filling up our carpet space!

We have looked at different aspects of Growth & Living Things –discussing how the needs are similar but different.

The Reception children have been learning facts about different kinds of bears -ask them if they can remember 3 or more facts!

We had a wonderful time at our Christmas party!

Their independence and enjoyment was there for all to see!
I was very pleased with the Y5 Buddies who sang so well to tell the story.

Well, what an exiting half term this has been!

The Spring term has been very busy in Reception class! We have learned a lot about Living Things and what they need.

This term we are really getting our teeth (and tongue!) around the new Letters and Sounds Programme.

Hello welcome to the Reception class of 2007!

KS1 children are very lucky, not only do they have very elegant new coat hooks and shoe racks but they are also surrounded by a fantastic mural depicting bible stories

On the opposite wall they can have fun finding the rhyming words and phrases, a dog on a log or a wizard with a lizard, although this can take rather a long time to hang their coats up!

GRRRRROWL!

That was the sound to be heard regularly in Reception class over he last half term.

Our study of BEARS was of great interest to the children – why not ask them for some facts about Polar, Grizzly, Panda, and Koala and of course the cuddly Teddy Bears-to see what they can remember. Be prepared for a few GROWLS in between!

After settling in well, the children have experienced many opportunities over the year.

One of our most successful ventures has been the Buddy System. The Y5 children tried very hard to welcome your children into school. We hope they remain firm friends next year and who knows after that.

We enjoyed performing our Nativity Tableaux live at the Metro Centre. It was a daunting task in front of such a vast audience, but they rose to the occasion and I was very proud of the children!
