Year 5 - Autumn Term, Part 1

Well, what a half term we've had in Year 5! The days and weeks have raced by and all our new class members (myself included!) have settled in really well.

Lots of fantastic work has been produced throughout the past seven weeks.

In Literacy we have been looking in depth at the work of the much-loved author, Roald Dahl. We have been inspired by his humourous writing style, producing poetry influenced by the infamous fruit from "James and the Giant Peach" and his short story Esio Trot, which confused many to begin with esuaceb fo eht lausunu yaw taht ti si nettirw!

In Numeracy we have been working on lots of useful mental stratgies to help us with our addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. These have come in useful when challenging ourselves to a game of FizzBuzz!

In R.E. we have been looking at the topics of beginnings and friendship, which have been particularly important as we have had to new responsibility of helping out our new reception class buddies and setting a good example for them in and around school.

We have been investigating rivers in Geography and have produced factfiles about some of the world's most famous rivers. We have also been studying the journey of these rivers, taking in to account such geographical phenomena as meanders and ox-bow lakes. In Art too, we have looked at objects that we may find at the river's edge and have produced some fantastic shaded and watercolour pictures with Mrs. Pomeroy.

Science lessons have been devoted to looking at how we keep fit and healthy and this will continue after the half term break. We have looked at different types of healthy and unhealthy food and we will look in more depth at fitness in the coming weeks.

Finally, in French we have been looking at the topic of Les Animaux à la Maison (that's pets to you and me!). We know the difference between un cochon d'Inde and une arraignée and have produced some wonderful work to show this!

So, along with P.E. and Swimming on a Friday, we've had a really busy half term indeed! We're all looking forward to much of the same next half term and before we know it, it'll be Christmas!

Mr. Wheatley
